It's nice being able to get out and do things agai

It's nice being able to get out and do things again. I bought my Mom a piece of tiramisu cake (her favorite) and she's been savoring it for the past few days. Then I went to Vallejo's only music store (Consumer Music) and found a friendly place that had the Yamaha guitars I've been really wanting to see up close. The Pacifica 611vfm is a very cool guitar, even in purple.

Also, I wish the hospice company spaced out their visits. Instead of starting remote work this week, I spent most of it talking to people about how I'm doing, which does not pay for groceries or guitar lessons, assuming I get back to sitting like a normal person again. I currently practice while laying in bed, which is the same way I pee. Thankfully, I can eat like a normal person. I just lean to the left, while doing it, which is exactly at weird as it sounds.

My story may not end with my current turn in hospice. I might be able to get back into my fight against cancer. OR something else that wants to kill me might strike me down. I just don't know. I only know that I dearly I love my friends and family.

I've come to a conclusion. It's not all right if you don't finish your life's work. You should always strive to get better, start new projects and chip away at projects that you've been spend blood, sweat, yada, yada, BUT so much joy you hold onto it every day even if no one else ever sees it.

How do you prepare for the day, when there's nothing to be prepared for? I have a staff job, but remote work is TBD. I love being an archaeologist, field or otherwise. I'm not built to read books or listen to them, unless I'm numbed by the constant movement of machinery through the PA. I want to get out and do anything. But I've been left so weak by my stay in the hospital that I can barely make it out of bed, let alone an outside door. How I envy the days of working out, running and cycling that went towards getting ready for a field season.

I will, however, rise again and at least walk around a whole block without the benefit of a walker. Or I'm going to die trying. Which is everyone's life isn't it. You work a little, you play a little, makes friends, meet loved ones and make a life. I HATE that has stopped for me. Or that this break is being dragged out for so long.

When I was a young person, trying to type out a page of anything a day on my typewriters, I loved reading this person's writing. It's also why I owned so many cars by the time I finished my undergrad.

His writing is why I love traveling so much. Then I discovered archaeology and found a different way of visiting every place that didn't require side of the road repairs. I wonder what YouTube van lifers would make of my early travel days, where I would throw my bed roll in the back of my Tacoma and fall asleep watching for shooting stars and listening to Coyotes in the distance.

Out of the chaos that was getting me into hospice, in case my death was imminent, I forgot to have my Peter Egan books saved. Which is a glimpse into the way I spend the #gofundme money I've received. I spend money on food to keep my body alive and on books, music etc. to keep my mind and soul alive until they can both get around for an entire day without pain or worry about an injury or sickness that would not have bothered me, when I was a full, healthy person.

Today, I had enough energy to get up and use my new wheelchair for the first time. Just in time to enjoy Carl's Jr. free burger day 😀 Although it was surprising how much of a production it was to get me out of bed and wheeled into the kitchen. It's amazing how much of a boost it is to just get out of the room I've been stuck in for over a month without worrying about passing out or needing a lot of painkillers.

The wound that was supposed to kill me is a long way from being fully healed, but now I'm hopeful I can get out and about when the weather warms up. I'm not able to go far, but the ocean, a maritime museum and lots of highly recommended restaurants are all five to ten minutes from where I am. It'll be nice to actually see Vallejo instead of reading about it in a food delivery app.

It will also be the biggest relief to get a haircut, my eyes checked so I can get new glasses sans scratched lenses and back into clothes. You don't realize how much self esteem comes from the ordinary until you spend weeks in diapers and quick change clothing, and have to ask people to bring you every last little thing otherwise things would hurt too much or you have to pop a pill afterwards.

It's strange to go from an existence where I did everything myself to one where I can't do much anymore, without help. What I wouldn't give to make my own coffee in the morning or put on pants, because I'd just have to take them off, when it was time for my sponge bath, or the several times a day my body fills two layers of diapers with pee, even though I still have to go the regular way almost every hour, and it's too hard to roll myself out of bed and go ten feet to the bathroom, because I have to avoid disturbing my last wound, so it can heal.

So I have to use a bottle/urinal now, which fills up fast and has to be emptied throughout the day, because I'm still trying to drink the eight liters a day my oncologist recommended, in case I do heal and can restart my fight against cancer. Which is why I don't bother with pants, or shirts that are hard to get off, and fill my time with books, what if/future plans, figuring out what I'm going to have for lunch/dinner, and what I can do that I didn't have time for, when I was an archaeologist all day, every day.

Yesterday, I found a music shop that gives guitar lessons that is a ten minute drive from where I usually spend most of the day in bed (so my body can heal), and has coffee shops, delis and other things I'd like to try visiting, too. Thankfully, my old guitar didn't end up among the things that got donated or thrown away, because I was going to die anyway (so why bother pretending), which influenced the decisions of those around me, after I was released from the hospital into hospice care.

I'm kinda looking forward to being that guy at the party, with the guitar, which is only one step less annoying than that person who finally "discovered" something (religion, travel, being healthy, whatever), and is too anxious to be interested in talking about anything else, which I believe is why smoke breaks were invented. Lol

Enforced idleness and hope of being able to surviv

Enforced idleness and hope of being able to survive this medical craziness has my mind considering what my life will be like, if/when I get to start it up again. I want to make time for the kinds of adventures I wanted to go on when I was a kid. Adventures that involved vintage cars, bedrolls and camp fires.

So now I'm looking through auction sites for vehicles that make the least practical ways to get anywhere, and researching mechanic classes. Because who knows how to tune a carburetor anymore? ALSO, how cool would I look showing up at a monitoring gig in a vintage truck from the twenties or thirties! 😀😀😀

Yesterday, a few of my cousins drove my sister, niece and I around the Bay Area and San Francisco, because my niece hasn't visited the since she was a kid. I got around pretty good, with the aid of a walker, and didn't feel like dying, when I got back many, many hours later.

Today, my sister, niece and I walked around Mare Island, and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Vallejo isn't the most pleasant place I've lived, but Mare Island is a very nice place to spend an afternoon.

I drove, again, and felt alright afterwards, which means I didn't have to take a bunch of painkillers or immediately go to bed, when I got back. I also put my walker to better use and walked a distance that felt like miles to me, but was probably three blocks (from our starting point at a great coffee shop) to a brewery, where we ordered food and drank sodas and coffee, and back. Lol

I'm definitely not close to field shape. I'm weak as f@*k. Cars that are low to the ground AND don't have any headroom do not work for me. A two wheeled walker isn't meant for walking that far, AND generate crazy amounts of friction. It reminded me of those days where I was out on a bike ride, got too many flats, ran out of patches and ended up pushing my bike back home. The days where I can go anywhere without a caretaker and bathroom breaks don't involve hiding in a vehicle are over.

I'm still looking forward to taking trips with friends, visiting them (fingers crossed), and finally healing from this infection and finishing my cancer fight, BUT I'm a long way away from that.

I had to be brought back to the hospital via ambulance. I still feel awful. I want this whole thing to be over. I still have so many things I want to do with my life. One of them is to spend another day fishing. You don't realize how many simple days you'll miss, when you're life is stuck in neutral.

My appreciation for the ordinary increases with every small victory. Today I got up and sat down to eat breakfast. Maybe I was still in my room and I was sitting on my bed. But how long has it been since I've been able to do that?

My hospice social worker came to talk to me and I was able to sit up and talk to her, like a regular non-bed-ridden person. It felt like such an accomplishment, and my social worker noted that I look a lot better than when she saw me a over a month ago. But I'm not close to enjoying a whole, ordinary day. I could feel my strength ebb away from me while I was eating lunch. I had a whole day of personal projects I was hoping to get to. Instead, I had to spend my afternoon napping.

BUT I'm going to keep trying until I get through an entire day. Here's to the completely ordinary, the mundane and uneventful. I wish I had appreciated those days more, when they weren't anything to hope for.

I finally drove to Bud's, a local burger institution, and found that they were pretty good. I also saw my first #cybertruck

I've also come to accept that I need a step stool to get into my truck, unless I get my full range of motion back in my right leg.
